Pig Tales

A few days ago for dinner we had a delicious meal of pork-the first pork we have had here. Most people buy pork in a grocery store and have no idea where it came from and what its fate was but yesterday we got a good look at where our dinner actually came from. In the morning as we were doing school someone came to the door and asked if we were interested in buying some pork. The pig was being butchered in the village and they were trying to sell it. We thought we would try it and we asked if the pig had already been slaughtered. The answer was yes but that it was still in the village and they were finishing. So off we trooped to see the dead pig.  It wasn't very far and we had been on the road before when we were going to our sponsor child's house. We walked through a garden and came to where the butchers were with Aunt Lucy watching the whole process. When they flipped the pig around and washed it you could see where you ribs came from. the pig was lying on banana leaves as well as all the insides. soon the liver was washed and placed in a banana leaf package and then tied with a old banana leaf that was all withered and brown. They stuck the pig into a sack, strapped it on a bike and started pushing it home.

As we walked back to the road we saw a huge hole that was being made into a latrine. Aunt Lucy told us that a few nights ago the pig had fallen into the hole and it wouldn't stand up and it couldn't walk so they had to have 2 people go into the whole and tie ropes on the pig and then have several people yanking on the ropes to get the pig out- I'm sure it was quite a commotion! They were going to call the vet but decided just to slaughter it instead since it would have probably died anyway. Unfortunately the pig was going to have 6 piglets so Aunt Lucy was quite upset since she now only has 2 pigs. But now everyone knows not to keep holes in the ground open in the night but the pig was delicious!
