P7 Week

This is 3-4 weeks late, but better late than never....

 In Uganda, the school year starts in February and ends in November. There are 7 primary grades and there are 6 secondary grades. At New Hope, we have the 7 primary classes (P1-P7) and then we have up to S4 (secondary 4). At the end of P7 (and S4) you have big national exams. The national exams at the end of P7 determine the future for a lot of kids. If they do well in the exams then they may go on to secondary school, but if they don't they will go to vocational school or just start working.

        Two weeks ago was the Primary Leaving Exams (PLE) so we had many anxious P7ers around! We have 4 P7s in David Family and Christina and I have some good friends who are in P7. We made success cards for them and wished them well on Sunday and on Monday and Tuesday they wrote their PLEs.

       Last week they had their entrance exams into our secondary school here, and this week they are having a fun P7 week that all the P7 classes get!
Now to the story....

        On Wednesday my mom was asked to have a group of the P7s to come and bake a cake. My mom agreed and was told that they would come at 2 in the afternoon. At 3:30 they showed up! We showed them the recipe that we were going to make which was Lemon Loaf.

     First we had to pick the lemons! We blind-folded 3 kids and then the others had to direct them down our path and into the lemon patch and to pick the lemons off the tree.


       When we came back we washed our hands and then got to work. First, we had to explain that you couldn't just pick a big cup of flour and dump it in the bowl and call it one cup you had to measure we all went on our way. We also had to explain that you shouldn't put 1/4 CUP of baking soda in one lemon loaf but 1/4 teaspoon instead!

       When we finished our loaves and put them in to bake, another group came to bake their cake at our house as well. We watched an episode of Little House on the Prairie and took some pictures after the cakes were out of the oven and sent them on their way!
